Dan Browne (b. 1982) is a filmmaker and multimedia artist whose works explore patterns and nature through dense and kinetic forms.
Dan’s films and videos have been presented at over 120 festivals and venues internationally, including TIFF’s Wavelengths section, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Diagonal Film Archive, Centre Georges Pompidou, Festival du nouveau cinéma, Early Monthly Segments, and Anthology Film Archives. His work has received multiple awards, include the Jury Prize for Best Canadian Work at WNDX Festival of Moving Image, First Prize at Athens International Film + Video Festival, and the Deluxe Cinematic Award at Images Festival for memento mori (2012).
Dan's art practice also encompasses live performances in collaboration with musicians, which have been presented at venues such as MUTEK (2013) and Vector Festival (2015), and video installations that have received public commissions in Toronto (2016) and Vancouver (2017). He has also collaborated with many other filmmakers and artists, including Michael Snow, R. Bruce Elder, Carl Brown, Peter Mettler, Núria Giménez Comas, and members of the Loop Collective.
Dan holds a PhD (2020) in communication and culture from Toronto Metropolitan University and York University, and has published articles and interviews in Incite Journal of Experimental Media, Found Footage Magazine, Hors Champ, Millennium Film Journal, and chapters in Process Cinema: Handmade Film in the Digital Age (McGill–Queens UP, 2019) and Canadian Cinema in the New Millennium (McGill–Queen’s UP, 2023). He lives and works in Toronto.
